The Ancient Chia Seed
You may have noticed some water bottles around the dojo, especially Sensei’s, with interesting particles floating about inside of them. What could they be? If you didn’t know, they’re chia seeds.
Chia (or salva hispanica) originates from Central Mexico, and was the product of Aztec and Mayan cultivation. For the Mayans, Chia was synonymous with strength, and the seeds were their go-to energy source preceding physical activity or trekking. The stuff continues to be a staple in Mexico today.
Aside from supplying fibre, magnesium, iron, calcium, omega-3 fats, vitamins, and minerals to the body, chia seeds work as a solid protein alternative. Just a tablespoon provides 5% of clean, easily digestible daily protein intake…making it an ideal choice for those following a vegan diet.
What may be the most agreeable aspect of these chia seeds are their flavour…or lack thereof! Sprinkle them on or in anything, anytime, without altering the flavour of your base (oatmeal, yogurt, salads, or, of course, water).
Until next time!
